About the study
The first nationwide Saudi study to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of autism and related developmental disorders among Saudi children, at a time when the condition was barely known to the public and to many physicians. Dr. Ahmed Ali Aljarallah led the study as principal investigator under a grant from King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology; his colleagues completed the final technical report, issued by King Saud University after his passing.
Dr. Ahmed believed deeply in the importance of studying autism — overcoming the difficulties of its diagnosis and understanding the needs of patients and their families. He worked to educate pediatricians across the Kingdom on its early signs and diagnostic methods, in years when the disorder was scarcely known.
In his final days, while enduring his own illness, he remained at the head of this national study. Among his ambitions was a comprehensive center for autism research and treatment at King Saud University — he passed away before seeing his work bear fruit.
The study was never published in a scientific journal; its final technical report remained preserved with his family. The family makes it available here in full — a public archive in service of researchers and specialists, and a continuation of his mission.
